Blogosphere Bloom

Insights, Internet Marketing January 2nd, 2008

Looking back, one of the best skills I have learnt (and is still learning) is blogging.

New found interest - blog
Self-improvement and spiritual books are still top on my list and for the past few months, unknowingly; I have expanded my range to blog. There are a couple of good books which outlined the in’s and out’s of blogging. It is quite motivating to learn how blog has evolved, impacted and will continue to influence the world.

Library
It started from “The Corporate Blogging Book” by Debbie Weil and after which I start to peep into other bloggers which were mentioned in the book. Curiousity got the better out of me. Tapping onto the efficiency of my hometown library online facilities, I did a search for subject(s) related to the blogosphere. Call it a moment to quench my desire for wanting to find out more, I simply pick out all the books listed (and readily available) and filter down to those that are of interest to me. Despite filtering, I ended up borrowing a pile of books home…

Bookstore
As if I could finish reading the pile of books, a day before Christmas Eve; I made a purposeful trip to Kinokuniya – just to dig out books that I could not find at the library. Despite cautioning myself that there will definitely be post Christmas sales, I still ended up buying. Impulsive buy =p

Shelf space for blogosphere related books?
Just for sheer fun, since blog is going to (and is still growing) its dominance, I wonder how fast would books on blogosphere topics grow on the shelves? Took snapshots of books related to blogging subject. As of 23 December 2007, there is only 3 shelves space for online blogging books.

I wonder how fast and far will blogging range dominate the shelf space, 6 months down the road?

Inspirational Stories, Internet Marketing October 20th, 2007

What can a 12 years old kid do with Internet, other than for educational or gaming reasons? For Carl Ocab who started at 12 but only make his mark at 13 years old, he has clearly demonstrated that a person who experiences most wins. He has collapsed his timeline by having the experience of an old man while still young. And because he doesn’t give a dime of his past failures, he has gotten himself lots more experience to add into his blogging inventory. He is only 14 now… Too young to start?

Olive Riley. Born in 1899 and started the first post of her blog on 16 February 2007….. She is like a GREAT grandmother to all bloggers in the blogosphere. So what if her friend Mike is the real blogger who types as Olive tells her stories? If one truly desires, one will find all alternative ways to attain that desire. For Olive, Mike is her technical arm ;) So, you think you are too old to learn new things? Olive Riley has just celebrated her 108 years old birthday!

Great achievement often happens when our backs are up against the wall. I have witnessed how this typical normal young chap have grown and is still growing because his boat was burnt. Shouldering the burden of being the sole breadwinner for a family of 5 and with the urgency to attain monetary success for a bedridden father, Alvin Phang is another walking testimonials of why blog to success is not a fad nor a fallacy.

Really, having read about these two bloggers of extreme age gap 14 and 108 and to know Alvin Phang personally, leaves me with no BUTs. I stood by the fence for two years before I finally start blogging. Carl Ocab reminded me to collapse my own timeline to relish my utmost experience while still on this physical realm and Olive inspires me to keep learning. Indeed, aging only happens to those who lost their lust for getting better and disconnect from their natuarl base of curiousity.

I have collected my World Class Reference points to carve my niche in blogging. Start collecting your own list of heros too.Still undecided? Burn your boats. When retreat is not an option, one will show up fully.

Social Bookmarking Sites

Internet Marketing July 10th, 2007

Sometimes, definitions of Internet Marketing tools are simply inexplicable. One must explore and try it before realizing the importance and beauty.

That is how I feel over social bookmarking sites. Heard so much about bookmarking sites and took me more than 3 months before I really ventured into this arena.

One of my mastermind team, Jasmond shared that there is a site (www.onlywire.com) that collates all the popular bookmarking sites and all you need is just one time registration. Upon registration, your site will be instantly linked up with about top 20 social bookmarking sites.

I have tried mine today and I am monitoring the effectivenss of traffic generation. Just a documentation for myself, present Alexa ranking is 437, 675. And indeed by 14/7, a mere 4 days, Alexa ranking rise again to 400,353.

Hmm… next target is to work on my backlink to create a beautiful figure for my PageRank, PR.

Google Adsense

Internet Marketing June 19th, 2007

I started building this site from scratch on 2/6/07 and applied the very basic and simple tools that Alvin has taught us -

1. blog something personal

2. use server based wordpress

And from Alexa ranking of 1.2 millions, my site rocketed very fast that by the second week of June; I realized that my ranking rose to 900 thousands and the next moment it jumped again to 700 thousands. I got excited and realized that mostly, it was because of the videos I have uploaded.

All the rise in the rankings happen in a mere 2 weeks of blogging! WOW! If I really adopt all the strategies on what Alvin has taught us, in no time; my blog will definitely generate traffic.

Motivated, I decided to submit for Google Adsense on 17/6/07 which simply means asking google to advertise on my blog. Nevertheless, according to Ewen Chia, the Affiliate Internet Marketing Guru; Google Adsense should be taken as only a side income.

This is so to avoid being over-dependent on Google which the latter is beyond our control. In the interim, shall sit back and await for Google Adsense response.

Mastermind Group Part I

Internet Marketing June 17th, 2007

It is getting more and more exciting.
Since it is crucial to have a mastermind group, we have a few groupings formed to help alleviate our learning curve to succeed online.

One of the groups is our exisiting batch of peers who undergo the same training under Alvin Phang. We have agreed upon to set up one common blog for the sole purpose of maximizing, applying and reinforcing on the strategies that Alvin has taught us.

The other group is for the purpose of leveraging on each other strengths. Both Jasmond and myself will position ourselves as the infrastructure support whilst Mary and Jeanette would provide their resources on their existing expertise such that we can have content rich blogs as fast as possible.

Coffee session with Alvin Phang

Internet Marketing May 12th, 2007

Taking into consideration that this coffee session is going to be more technical based and that we have to travel all the way to Tampines (west to east), Jasmond decided to attend alone and share with me later.

Plug-in
My frustration with plugs-in is indeed self-explanatory. In fact, Alvin Phang forsee that this is a bottleneck for most beginners and he is fast to package up all his self-tested plugs-in in his atomicblogging (launching soon product) and offer a more user-friendly option.

WYSIWYG vs HTML code
His further advice to rectify changing font, paragraphing, spacing and colour issue on wordpress is to use Adobe Dreamweaver software instead of the tedious HTML coding.

How to maximise outdated and extra CPU
Through causal conversation, Jasmond discovered that Alvin has 5 extra CPUs lying around and he used them to download additional information. Jasmond queried over the feasibility of converting them into server and Alvin commented that server consumes too much electricity since it has to be on 24hrs daily. Hmmm… worth considering since we do have extra CPU lying around too. Moreover, Jasmond has been using torrant.com very frequently of late and according to Alvin, sometimes torrant do have virus attached.

Pointer to upload Video
Fatia lamented on the number of times she kept trying to upload video but to no avail. But with just one click, Alvin was able to upload the video right at the spot. Thanks to Fatia’s experience, we finally get to realize that there must be a specific procedure to upload the video. Copy and paste html code of a video to the blog must always be done LAST. If one needs to do further editing to a blog, copy and paste html code of the video has to be re-inserted again.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Since the first day I met Alvin, I have been wondering why did he lament over Fabian Lim for not knowing what’s a FTP. In any case, I discovered from Jasmond that there is a shortcut to do FTP with filezilla. Definitely more user-friendly.

My Website is being hacked!

Internet Marketing May 11th, 2007

5 days have passed since I last migrat my-collectible-gift to be server based. And by 10/5, my site is being hacked by a self-proclaimed x2Fusion hacker!!

Fortunately, there isn’t much valuable information on my-collectible-gift yet. Unfortunately, all my information has been wiped out! Though the information that I upload are very minimum and not very confidential, it took me weeks to just manage to get them up and running! Weeks of work, and within a minute; all my data gone!!!

Liased with Tdothost.com, the webhost that I have registered for and quite a shock to learn from them that their billing system has been hacked too!

Contacted our mentor, Alvin Phang and he mentioned that the service of Tdothost is not as up-to-standard as before.

I have also requested from Tdothost for a detailed explanation of what’s the cause and how best to prevent hacker in the future.

Below an extract of Tdothost’s reply:

My site’s billing system was hacked too.
I requested a restore for your site.

There are many ways for hacker to gain control of a site.
For example, he may have hacked the cPanel OR FTP password for your domain, or better yet, the
hacker may go after a known vulnerability in a php script (i.e. wordpress or a wordpress plugin).

There is little anyone can do for a site or server that is already hacked, but I
can help offer some advise to prevent it in the future.
- Make sure you use the latest versions of any software or plugin you use.
- Make sure you always change your passwords ( cpaned, ftp, email, ….)
- Make sure no one knows your password

PlugIn

Internet Marketing May 11th, 2007

Since served based wordpress is highly recommended, we officially registered our webhost via tdothost.com on 5 May 2007. Get to learn some basic FTP functions as a result. For once, I have a feeling that I am a network administrator.

I still do not enjoy blogging on wordpress because it appears unfriendly to me. The features on WYSIWYG really need more enhancements and improvements. My experience of trying to do alignment, spacing, paragraphing, changing of font and colour is quite a turn-off.

I was so adviced that one of the main reasons why wordpress is widely used is because of plug-ins. Did read up some plugs-in but without much understanding. I gathered plug-ins are something that can only be appreciated when one is targetting and looking at specific feature to enhance one’s site. By reading the summarized explanation of what the specific plug-ins are for, none appeals to me.

However, when Jasmond showed me social bookmarking, I get interested. It then dawned on me that it is not that I am uninterested in plug-in but more to that I do not understand each and every function.

Shall leave the part of trial and error of all kinds of plug-in to Jasmond to explore and validate.

Till then, I rest my case with plug-ins.

The Great Formula

Internet Marketing April 20th, 2007

Although Alvin has stressed and assured that he has given us all the necessary information to kick start our online business, I am still particularly interested to read up additonal resources and information by Mark Joyner and Joe Vitale.

Mark Joyner is an interesting figure as he is given the title as the godfather of Internet Marketing. Quote from Brett Mcfall is such that Mark is widely recognized as one of the early pioneers of Internet Marketing and is responsible for introducing many of the technologies and tactics you see used on the Internet today (most notably e-books, remotely hosted ad-tracking, and integration marketing).

Till date, though I have only browsed through 2 of Mark’s books - The Irresistible Offer and The Great Formula, I find his style of writing - short, sweet and simple to read, yet profoundly quality content.

One of the examples shared by Mark in his “The Great Formula” (which comprises of successful marketing strategies used by successful entrepreneurs), set me thinking hard over creating my pool of “thirsty customers”.

Below is an extract of marketing strategy used by Joe Sugarman,

I met somebody who was the licensing agent for Pablo Picasso. The art of Picasso, who had died in 1973, was so popular that his licensing firm was able to license everything from bedsheets to many household items – all with his images.

I got to know the licensing agent well. And one day he approached me and made a suggestion. Why not put Picasso’s images on 6” x 6” tiles? It had never been done before, and besides, it would be an authentic limited edition by Pablo Picasso and licensed by the Picasso family estate.

The idea appealed to me primarily because I thought I’d have a little fun with it. First, I realized that to simply sell a limited quantity of a piece of art on a tile was okay, but I wanted to develop a business from this with ongoing sales.

I also realized that I didn’t have a mailing list of strong prospects to whom I could mail the offer. And I knew that it took years to develop a strong list, anyway. And since the tile was a new art form, it might encounter buyer’s resistance from the public.

I saw the marketing challenge as multifaceted. First I needed to somehow build a mailing list. Second, I had to establish a strong value for an art form that nobody had heard of with an artist who was world famous; and finally I had to do it rather quickly. I didn’t want to wait years to establish a company. So here’s what I did.

I took out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal offering a limited edition set of six tiles at a very reasonable price - $7 per tile. In addition, I explained that the price and the offer were limited since we had only 1,250 sets to sell and that we were not making any money from it. In fact, I showed the cost to make the tiles and the cost of the ad in the Journal, indicating that we were not making a penny from it. I also explained that we would surely be oversold and that we would use a ‘random selection process’ to select the future owners of the tiles. In short, we would let our computer randomly generate who our customers would be. The ones who were not selected we would advise that the series wouldn’t be available to them.

The ad ran and it was a huge success. Not only did we sell all 1,250 tile sets, but we received a total of 8,000 requests, most of which we had to turn down.

Presto! Overnight, we had a large hot mailing list – a list that consisted of customers who were rejected and denied the opportunity of buying from me. In addition, we took the focus away from the unusual nature of the art form. It didn’t matter if it was a tile or canvas, as it was the hot nature of the limited availability of a hot collectible that was more important. And finally, we had 8,000 people who would love to buy our next offering whom we could reach by mail (thus avoiding the high cost of advertising in the Wall Street Journal) and of course, we could earn a nice profit. And that is exactly what we did, following up with a series of Picasso tiles.

Our first mailing generated a 65.8% response rate – one of the highest in my career and one of the biggest responses I’ve ever heard by anybody else. Typically, if you received a 2% response that was considered good.

The subsequent promotions did very well, and with a strong base of 8000 names, we were able to build a nice business for the next few years.

Deny somebody something, create a mailing list of rejected customers, offer them something in the future, and sit back and count the profits. Not a bad way to generate a nice little business, let alone a nice income.

Blogging at wordpress

Internet Marketing April 19th, 2007

While pending for the subscription of webhost till next month, tried blogging through wordpress.

Not as user friendly as www.multiply.com. Would need some time to explore further. Couldn’t find the choice of font type. Thought I have already chosen my theme presentation, but it didnt turn out to what I expect…
